Maternal instincts after hysterectomy

Hi everyone

I’m hoping for a bit of guidance, this is a tricky one. I’m currently pregnant with my second, this will be my mums 4th grandchild. My mum loves loves babies and children however she had a hysterectomy due to endometrial cancer and since then she said she just feels empty. She will love this baby to death but just said she doesn’t have the excitement she felt with the others and it’s breaking her heart. She’s heartbroken that it feels her maternal instincts and feelings have just vanished since the hysterectomy. Has anyone else had a mother or female family member go through the same after the surgery? We understand hormones are non existent now and think it may be that which she is going to talk to her gynaecologist about. Just curious to see if anyone else has been through this and if there was a positive outcome for the other person.

The chances of her having the exact same level as excitement over the 4th as she did the 1st, 2nd and 3rd are pretty low. That doesn’t mean she doesn’t love them of course, but it does loose some of the excitement.
Plus the hormonal changes she is going through, it all sounds pretty normal.

Thank you. She feels heartbroken and empty. She’s always had strong feelings and she feels they have just vanished. My heart breaks for her :(

This sounds a lot like a HER problem, probably more that she’s reflecting on changes from having cancer and changes to her body. It’s her new normal, she’ll have to find her way and I know all these feelings are hard for her - but you’re pregnant and she shouldn’t be putting that on you.
