Where to stay on a road trip?

The family and I are doing a road trip from cairns to Brisbane and back at Xmas time. We usually stay at the Big 4 adventure park in Airlie beach for a few nights on the way home but are looking for somewhere new this year. Does anyone know any great places to take/stay with the kids preferably close to the coast road? Something with the wow factor for the kids? Thankyou
