Smoking Neighbours

Hi everyone, Im hoping to get some advice on how to approach a smelly situation. I'm currently a stay at home mum to a 1 year old, I'm also 5 months pregnant and im home most of the time. We live in northern qld so the days have been so nice recently and it's so rare to enjoy the house being open and not closed up with the air conditioning on. The problem is everyday I keep getting strong wafts of marijuana coming in the house and I cant handle it. I know my sense of smell is so sensitive at the moment but others in the house can smell it too and it's not nice playing with my baby in the loungeroom and suddenly the house stinks like pot smoke! The neighborhood is friendly enough we all wave, say hello, occasionally they have a drink and a get together. I don't know where the smoke is coming from and I dont know what to say if I did know. I'm not judging and I dont care what they do in their own home I just would like to be able to have my doors or windows open and not have it blow through the house! Any advice would be great!

If you’re friendly like you say simply ask them to smoke in another area of their yard, if not then you’re probably going to have to suck it up, I’m sure it’s not a constant thing so maybe close your windows for the 5 minutes that they’re having a smoke

I live in an apartment where all our balconies touch, and our neighbours sit on theirs and smoke pot. My 6 month old granddaughter and her mumma ( my daughter) live with me and when they smoke their pot we cant leave our balcony door open as it comes straight thru our door.

I had enough so I called Strata who wrote to them with a warning, pending further action if it continues as smoking is prohibited.

Approaching them over the balcony one day was met with mind my own business, so going further to starta was my only option. Plus I'm doing the other neighbours a favour too , we're all sick of it . We pay a hell of a lot to live here, it's not a slum place, its high end living and I pay for that lifestyle, so you betcha I'm going to say something and have.

In your case call the council if they aren't approachable. Just be prepared they may know its you as the council will write to them.

I had the same issue when I lived in an apartment, except our adjoining neighbours smoked inside and were such heavy pot/ciggie smokers that the smell was actually seeping through our shared brick walls to the point it was making us feel ill.
I think speaking to the council is OPs best bet too, I also imagine it would be someone reasonably close by as the smell isn't dissipating into the air. So it wouldn't take too much to figure out who/where it's coming from!

Maybe casually mention to your neighbours how vaping instead of smoking is so much better for your health and greatly reduces strange smell is also more economical.

We had this exact situation recently. Our kids bedrooms and our kitchen are on the same side of the house as the neighbours who smoke weed multiple times a day. We don’t have an issue with people smoking weed, each to their own, but when it starts impacting our life then it’s only fair to say something. We ended up popping a friendly note in their mailbox, just saying look guys, we have no issue with what you do in your home, but we can constantly smell weed, our kids room smell of weed and it wafts in to our eating area. Please could you relocate your smoking area somewhere else. They responded with a friendly note apologizing and said they had no idea that it was wafting over and said they’d relocate to another area of the house. We haven’t smelt it since. At the end of the day, it’s an illegal activity, so if they were going to be silly about it we’d just call the cops. Good luck!
