Midwife vs Doctor Assisted Pregnancy

Hi IM’s, I’m a new mum to be and I’m looking for some information. My doctor has asked if we want the pregnancy journey to be with a midwife or doctor assisted with hospital visits for scans ect. What are other mums experiences using either resource and preferences? Located in FNQ

Midwife both pregnancies! Can’t recommend it more highly!

I chose doctor assisted for both my pregnancies. My choice was based on the fact that my local hospital (in a big city) is extremely busy, so seeing the same GP fortnightly was a lot easier. When you choose GP assisted you still get sent to the hospital from 32 weeks anyway. You can't guarantee you'll get the same midwife/ nurse every visit. Most of my hospital visits were with trainees. I guess your decision should be based on the chances of weather you'll come into complications during your pregnancy. If low risk I'd stick with GP, high risk go to the midwife.

I have had 3 out of 5 pregnancies followed by a midwife. So much better. I always feel more comfortable dealing with the same lady the whole time.

I had midwife for first and GP for the next 3, only because midwife led care was not available to me where we lived. 100% midwife led care is better all round, they know everything, have great advice and know when to send you to the doctor. I just felt very comfortable with her too.

I had GP shared care via my local hospital and it was wonderful - my GP was a lady who was warm and whose knowledge I trusted implicitly - she shared her experiences as well as her knowledge and I felt well informed the whole way. I had two hospital visits during this time with the midwives which was good, but I knew that when I went into labour I may not have met the midwives on duty at the time. I had wonderful care regardless.

I am in NQ, pregnant with my 2nd and I am going midwife again, in a rural hospital. I have the same midwife I had with my first. She has been the best support and was so excited for us when she found out we were expecting #2.

We get to know the other midwives, just incase our midwife is unavailable at time of birth. We also get continued care for 6 weeks after the birth with the midwives coming to our house for check ups with me and baby
