Speech Pathology Study

Hi! I'm wondering if someone could tell me how I can become a Speech Pathologist? I currently hold a Bachelor of Primary Education in NSW. I'd love to do an online course if possible but I'm really not sure where to start!

I too looked into this. But I’m NSW it seems there is no online option

If it's online/ external / off campus you could do it through any university though

I’m pretty sure it’s only offered at New South Wales uni or Sydney. And it’s a pretty intensive course. Something I can’t commit to with young children part time work and living in Wollongong 😫

Have you considered other therapies like OT for example. No help with speech but I've found my courses by (intensely) browsing what's available.

I’m already an allied health professional looking to unload the amount of hands on work I do. But also need the pay to be equivalent. OT would be a reduction unfortunately. So 2 strikes for me

Speech therapy is pretty hands on..... I’m not paying someone to help me help my child for them to be in another place. You may think it’s a lucrative profession and sure you can make a lot of money. But I can’t afford a private speechy $100 for an hour yeah not within an oridinary people’s budget and so many speechies have lifted their prices trying to rorte the system becasue of the ndis and the government giving thousands with children with disability a hand to pay their therapists so their kids can become the best they can be. I know someone who was paying $60 for an hour for speech as soon as the ndis plan for them was confirmed they raised the cost to $100 and hour. So many unethical people out there.

You also will have to make a name for yourself and be very very good for people to want to use you. If you and my child don’t engage no matter your credentials I’ll look for another speech therapist.

I mean physically hands on as in using my body. To treat others.

I understand that you may feel that’s expensive however have you considered the $80,000 plus HECS debt they have to repay? The continued professional development they must attend 30plus hours annually? Rent on an office? Reception staff? Equipment in said office? Electricity? Insurance’s etc... when they see you one on one for that hour it’s the only money they can make in that hour.. where as a GP can see upwards of four people in the same time and charge $70 each. Medicare pick up a certain amount of that. Hard pressed to get bulk billing GPS in my area but if you do you literally are in and out so they can fit 6 people in that hour.

The NDIS probably has them doing a lot more paperwork per case also!

It’s funny how people whinge about the expense of some services but ignore others.

Look at you go having a rant at her about therapy fees . Stick to her enquiry at hand and stop being so personally angry at her over the cost of these services .

I was replying to another comment she made, which I read differently to how she meant it. Not hard to do when it’s not all explained in the original post or comments after so
...... shhhh I can have a rant if I want to. Affording 3x$100 sessions a week is off the cards for me. Thank fully the public system was extrmemely helpful when it came to my son. But not everyone with a kid with a disability can afford that. The public system isn’t great for everyone. Not everyone in the public system is in the job that makes them happy. Before I found myself in the position I am in now I was in the position where I had to put everything before myself. I didn’t buy myself new clothes for years and I was a broke ass who couldn’t even go out for coffee with friends. You can be annoyed with me if you want to be but a lot of people need a reality check. Those of a lower socio-economic group with children with disabilities deserve to be able to do the best by their children too. Not all disabilities can receive funding from the government to help. I certainly never thought I’d give birth to a child with alternate needs, but here I am.

You still going? Totally not what the original poster was asking. But here's you again re ranting on fees . She never asked this . Go to bed you need sleep.

NDIS rates differ because they have a standard amount they pay different allied health. The prices you said prior to NDIS are ridiculously cheap. I pay 190/wk for a 45 minute session for my son. Have done for 3 years... Bar the 5 sessions per year we get a medicare rebate. But honestly, an electrician charges more to install a fan and it is generally a quicker job (I'm allied health and hubby is an electrician). You're paying for someone's expertise that they worked hard to achieve. That's just how any economy works.

Speech therapists are not doctors lol and don’t study nearly as long.
I’m not sure why everyone thinks it pays so much, look up the average pay, it’s not a lot, 60 to 70k.
A bit like nursing, you don’t get the better money until you have heaps of experience and work your way up into senior positions or have your own practice and who wants the head ache of that?

Unfortunately you cannot study Speech Pathology online. I live in a regional area (Qld) and would love to become a Speech Pathologist but it can only be done on Campus and it isn’t available at all universities. ☹️

Check out the WA universities, we don’t have a uni in our town but my friend has qualified to be a speechie. You will have to do a prac and you will have to do exams but I know she didn’t go away for them. She went to the towns tafe to sit them at the same time others were sitting exams for something else.

It shouldn’t be an online course, it’s the kind of course you need practical experience.

I agree! It is a very heavy course load. Anatomy is best learnt in a lab where you can see it first hand!

Is it any different to any other online degree? All jobs require practical experience??? I'm not a Speechie so can't comment but I just cannot think of any job that theory alone would be enough....

I think a lot of online courses are almost tailored to people extending their current qualifications or who work in the field already.

Online courses can include pracs. The online portion is the lectures being online instead of oncampus.

Do a bit more research of uni's. I've recently started doing Social Work - it's not offered externally but the majority of subjects are external. Practicals of course aren't but everything else is in my course

Have you tried UNE, they offer loads of courses online and on campus! With a bachelor already you will have some recognition of prior learning which would make an easy transition. I can see you are pationate about this and i wish you all the best, let me know houw tou go wiyh UNE... Good luck!!!
