My hubby just had a phone call on his mobile from a debt agency, asking for information about a person who is possibly a 2nd cousin. I know the name but have never met him. My question is how do these people get our phone numbers and even realize we are related, we do not share surnames
We told them we didn’t know who they were talking about, they must have the wrong number and hung up

The other person may have put the name down as a 'contact'.
I had this with my sister years ago, rental shop rang me because she put my name down as a contact if they couldn't get hold of her, fell behind on the bill and stopped taking their calls.
I told them they should verify the 'contact' details a bit earlier because I had no part in their agreement.
They used to knock on my door looking for my uncle 20 years ago.
Yeah, the contact thing happened to me too. Although it was a friend who put me down.
Fast forward, I made it clear that we have severed that relationship.
