Returning to the workforce

Returning to the workforce

Its difficult being a mum returning to the workforce. I am a professional person and gaining employment in my career has been so difficult as all roles in my field are full time.
This week I will have to make the decision to wether to take a very menial job well below my skill-set to contribute to my family.
The work force seems so against mothers in the workplace. It has me feeling very overwhelmed and disadvantaged as a woman in todays society.

It’s a lie that mums who have been out of the workforce for some time are welcomed back with open arms. I have been trying to return to the workforce for 5 years and can’t even get a interview to work at Coles.

I agree. I had an interview that was going really well until the subject of kids came up then they were more worried that I'd have to take time off for the kids rather than caring about the fact I had all the experience and qualifications they wanted. While some mums may have been welcomed with open arms its certainly not like that for all mums and yes people often do discriminate against mums when it comes to work.

Im returning to the work force very soon. Im not qualified for anything (my biggest regret in life) so have to take what i can get. My husband is trying to get me a job where he works but in a different department. He is telling me they want females, and have a roster for school mums (the pitfall is its in the middle of whoopwhoop lol). Im very cautious and scared that as soon as one of my kids get sick they wont want me or will limit my hrs. I have been totally shitting myself and also feel so overwhelmed with it so your not alone.

Why do women automatically assume they have a right to part time work? Many professional roles are full time, flex can be negotiated, but it’s total bullshit that you can WFH and care for kids sub 5. And as an employer and employee I work FT in management. I am happy to have some flex but people need to be prepared to miss some stuff, use daycare and not always be the fun MUM. It’s life. You can’t have it all, get comfortable with it. Life is choice, so you do have to choose, shelve the career and spend heaps of time with family (I have done this) then resume more challenging work when you can commit to it.
