Career in Real Estate

Hi everyone!
I'm after personal experiences of parents who work in Real Estate.
I'm currently a SAHM of two with next to no job experience, so I've been looking at different study options. I found a course in real estate that looks interesting, and that I can do at my own pace.
I'm just wondering how other parents find the job in relation to children? What area of real estate do you work in?
What's the workload like, and is there much at home work required? What are the hours like? The pay?
Any information would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

It depends, to be really successful you need to be very committed. Attending open days all weekend, taking lots of calls, replying to emails, going out of your way all the time.. pretty much bending over backwards. It's a bit of a job you take home with you too, you don't go to work and come home and leave everything at the office.

Or you could just do the standard and not build yourself up heaps, there's always that option. You just don't make as much money. You really get out what you put in. I'd recommend starting from the bottom doing basic admin and then going from there, seeing if you enjoy it and going to get your license. Hours vary, but the pay is good when you build yourself up! You get commission too depending on sell price and company you work for.

You will be absent from your children in the evenings for meetings, open houses and also on the weekend. But not all the time, just do be aware.

I'd contact a few TAFEs and have a chat about the course and opportunity outcomes :)

Depends what area of real estate you want to go into.
But home sales you are basically on call 24/7. A lot of after hours with sellers and buyers. If someone wants to see a house you need to be able to show it, wether that's 6pm or 9am. Same as if someone puts an offer in, doesn't matter if it's after 5pm you work it! Your weekends are pretty full with open inspections and negotiations.
During school hours are really quiet which is when you are hunting for more sellers and chasing feedback from people who attended opens.

It's a pretty full on job and not family friendly. You will be expected to answer phone calls from home and negotiate sales out of hours. In real estate there isn't really normal business hours.

If you wanted to do property management (rentals) that's much better hours, but still open inspections on weekends but a lot more scheduled and not the same on call type situation.
