Want to quit my job but not yet?

Want to quit my job but not yet?

So, I was off work for years raising my kids. All my kids are at school now and 6 months ago I was offered a casual job by a friend (she owns the business). I accepted. Been working for her since. Trouble is, I HATE the job!! Hate it. I have decided to quit. But I was going to quit a month or so before Christmas then find work after Christmas. I want to save as much as I can for Christmas. But, Christmas is very very busy in this particular job. I don’t want to leave her short in trying to fill my shoes in the busiest time of year. But I need the money and need to save for Christmas and this money is all I have at the moment. I don’t want to quit yet because if I got another job, I might not be able to get time off and we’ve already booked and paid for half of a 2 week holiday. What would you do? Geez I hope that all made sense!

Give her notice now that you would like to leave before Christmas. That gives her plenty of time to find someone to replace you, train them and have them ready to go when you go. I don't think she will take it personally at all, I'm sure she will understand. Just don't leave with 2 weeks notice as that's a bit unfair, give as much as you can.

Friend or not always look after yourself first because you can be guaranteed if things in her business go bad you will be the first to go. If you are employed as a casual you don't have to give any notice at all but if you have your mind made up to quit before Christmas then just give her 2 weeks notice. Always......always put yourself first, never feel bad for an employer even if she is a friend.

Just start applying for jobs now while your still working. And leave when you get one. Plenty of time between now and Christmas for it.

Wow, it’s a lot about you, don’t you feel any loyalty to your friend that gave you a job?
I would say look for another job ASAP, don’t leave until you have another one, but if you don’t have one by end of September, I would stay and look again after Christmas. Also, you might need to adjust your expectations of working too, a lot of us don’t love our jobs but have to trudge on anyway.
