The best way to start one is work for one. You need to learn from the inside. It’s confronting work.
Most rescues these days work on a foster system, versus a kennel/shelter type set up. It’s easier to set up and better for most of the animals. Even more traditional rescues keep as many animals as they can in foster homes.
If you haven’t at least fostered animals (I have) start there. Even if you intend to be more on the business side, you need to do it yourself first.
Most rescues now start by fostering themselves then apply for charity status and start organising other people to foster under them and taking in animals directly versus through who ever they were originally fostering through.
Most people ending up paying out of pocket for food and vet bills because it’s hard to raise enough money. So it’s expensive!
