My son and I have vaya, unlimited talk/text plus 8GB data each, $16 each per month.
You can buy cheap smart phones from coles and woolies that work fine for basic use, under $100. They are usually tied to a network though but most have really good cheap pre paid plans now.

I work for Telstra and can honestly say it's a matter of what actually works for you. Going with no name brand options can be cheaper but for a good reason. Many don't offer great reception. That said, check out Belong or Aldi as they run off Telstra reception. I've used it personally for a year now without issue.
