ECE teaching

Do we have any ECE teachers in the group? I’d really love some advice about getting my foot in the door. I’m so, so passionate about working with children; guiding and supporting their learning and development, having a positive impact, being an advocate, and building meaningful relationships with children and their whanau.

I’ve recently completed my level 5 diploma, without placement, to gain a bit of knowledge whilst I was a stay at home mum. Now that my own children are of school age, I’m very eager to get my foot in the door. Would seeking out unqualified relief teaching be the best way to go? I worry my lack of experience working in a centre will hold me back? Any and all tips and advice would be much appreciated! Thank you.

Do you want to work in a childcare centre?
You've done your diploma, so you are qualified.
Just apply for jobs. Most centres are screaming our for relief workers too and you will learn everything you need to know on the job.
I've recently started as a relief/lunch cover after not working in Childcare for 10 years. I've been there a few months and I'm still learning.
Or ring around and ask to do some work experience.

Yes, early childhood. I have a diploma qualification but am considered unqualified until I have a 3 year degree. I guess I just don’t know how best to approach centres and really put myself out there and show that I’m passionate and eager to learn. Asking about work experience is a great idea though! Thank you.

So you want to be an actual teacher for kindergarten age?
I only have my certificate 3 but all teacher jobs in centres I've seen just want you to have a diploma. Maybe it's different in NZ.
I would call a few centres and ask them what you need to get your foot in the door if your qualification isn't considered enough.
Volunteering might be another way.
Goodluck!
