Kids Counselling

I need help for my 4yr old he needs some counselling. But apparently he is to young. My ex decided ice was more important then his family and after a binge weekend he decided to abuse me that’s why I left and my son saw this and is having nightmares about dad coming back to hurt mummy. I have asked a few places but they have all told me he is too young

Speak to your doctor? Or a DV service? Surely they will have somewhere you can contact for assistance.. good luck mumma. I’m glad you and your baby are safe x

What state are you in? This will help people recommend places better :)

Look at sand play therapy as a starting point. Even pet therapy services. These would be more suitable to supporting a 4 year old though trauma than traditional ‘counselling’.

It's not that he doesn't need support. He just isn't cognitively developed enough to process counselling techniques. Just focus on making him feel loved and safe.

Reassure him, find what soothes him and give him plenty. What makes him feel good and safe? Probably cuddles with mum. Maybe quiet time, stories, baths, massage.
You know all the things for self care? Give him all of those. Calm, enjoyable activities. Special treats. Make hot chocolates. Do painting together. Playing at the beach. Make sure you feel safe and he will pick up on that (he will grab onto anything at all that makes him think you don't or you're worried too).

You are able to book him in but sessions would focus on things you can do to help him. Play therapy would be appropriate along with stories to help him to process the trauma. If no one will book him in, look for someone for you that would be able to guide you through helping him to process the trauma.

Referral to a paediatrician. My child was 3 when we were seeing the paediatrician who referred to a child psychologist.
