Electric bill

Electric bill

Just curious, what’s a normal electricity bill for a family of 5 look like?
I’ve just been going through my bills and mine is usually 800-1200 per quarter.
I’m sure I must be doing something wrong here.
I pay my bill with EvenPay at $180 a fortnight which is why I didn’t realise my bill was high.

That is pretty high but each state charges differently plus the length of your bill cycle makes it seem larger than someone on a shorter Bill cycle. We are on bi monthly cycles, with solar panels, 5 x 1 bedroom home with 2 adults and 3 teenagers and our bills are around $300 in winter and about $500 in summer (pool pump and ducted air con)

We are a family of 4, but we have a constant stream of family visitors who come stay a night or two a week so we have up to 8 at any one time in the home. And my bill is about 450-$500 maximum per quarter. We don't have gas, everything runs off power. And we don't have solar panels.

Are you perhaps using a drier a lot? A pool? Multiple lights and TV's running at once? Dishwasher? All the little things ad up. I don't use a drier, even tho i own one, i wash dishes by hand , even tho we do have an elecric dishwasher, , and we unplug everything at the wall that isn't in use.

I'm in Tas, family of 5, only the one energy provider available.
We get our bills quarterly and they look pretty much identical to yours price wise.

The age of our house is definitely a factor I believe. Old wiring and fixtures that are less energy efficient, no insulation and old windows so our split sytem has to work overtime to keep the place warm in winter and cool in summer.

I’m a stay at home mum with 4 young kids. We live in south Australia and that’s about what our electricity bills look like. Definitely depends on what state you’re in and what appliances you’re running. Also do they do physical meter reads? There’s a few government comparison sites you can use depending on state

I'm in nsw, family of 5 in a large home. We pay on average $700 per quarter. No solar.
We had a leaking water heater, that was adding almost $75 a quarter to our bills. We didn't know it had been leaking for so long.
Service nsw currently has an electricity provider comparison tool, doing that saved me an extra 12% too. Had to sign up for a 12 month contract to get it.

My family of 4 would be similar but we have solar so it's only about 100/quarter

i think that is pretty high. 2 things to do, call your energy provider and ask what discounts they offer? if none shop around. Second thing if you have an older style home they are not very efficient at all. i had a little old 3 bed red brick home that cost $500/qtr in winter (i don't like heaters) and $1k in summer, however in a brand new home and new tech, costs about the same but much bigger house. Anything on standby costs money so fridges tvs etc, also found lots of small instant heat appliances are heavy on power ie microwave, kettle toaster etc. If you hire a sparky they can check for power leak issues

We are a recent family of 5
$1500 per quarter, but we do run the ac and dryer quite a lot
No solar and gas hot water 🤷‍♀️ I’ve always thought our bill was high for years. I’ve stopped using the dryer recently so I’ll interested to see if that makes a difference to the bill. We’re in NSW with AGL
