Hi just wondering if anyone knows anywhere that will give help towards getting an MRI
My partner needs it after having a prolonged seizure on friday. We have been told its payment up front and then can get back something from Medicare.
We are already struggling with Bills being overdue and having other unexpected medical costs.
I have tried various charities but none can help. Already have my centrelink loan out as needed for a medical emergency earlier on.
We both only get dsp and I get ftb which isnt much

Have you explained your situation to them? They might be able to just charge the out of pocket costs if you explain you are really struggling.
Failing that are you able to get some help off Friends/family?
Otherwise I don’t think there are any places you can go to get financial assistance for medical expenses.
Yep we have asked if we can pay the gap but they have stated no.
Friends and family cannot help as they are not in a financial position to give assistance
Are you able to just not put money into a bill and ask for an extension on the bill?
Maybe get some food package from a local charity and then use the money you’d use on food to pay for the MRI?
It seems terrible that he’s had a seizure and no one is willing to help with the costs of the MRI or even get it picked up by the hospital if he was admitted after it :(
I assume you’ve run around at all the places that will do the MRI??

Cant hold off paying bills. All are currently months overdue.
My miss 9 had emergency surgery in April and spent weeks in hospital. Still having OT and physio for that.
February this year our house was flooded and we didnt have insurance. Lost everything but have now slowly gotten the basics back
My son has had many MRIs at the public hospital (Cairns) and I’ve never had to pay a cent.
Can you get into the public hospital?
Hospital has stated he cant have it their as he isnt an inpatient. Due to covid restrictions we cant have it their it has to be at a private facility hence the payment.
Did your GP list you as a concession?
Who’s the referring doctor? If it’s a public specialist at a public hospital then he should be able to have it done at the hospital. If it’s a private specialist or GP then you will have to get it done privately and pay for it.
I’ve never had to pay for my sons MRI with a healthcare card. He’s always had them done privately.
What state are you in and have you told your GP or referring doctor?
What area are you in and how has the dr worded the referral? Sometimes they need it written a certain way to get it bulk billed. If he had a prolonged seizure why is he not in hospital getting it all sorted out?

Will ring him and ask can he word referral different to see if that helps.
Hes not in hospital for it still as it's not his first seizure and wont be his last. He is epileptic and seizures are a regular occurance
Ring around different mri places as only some have the medicare approved machines for bulk billing, whilst ur on to them ask how the dr needs to work it for bulk billing. It's ridiculous i know but they have to do it to cover themselves.

I hate asking for help. And then when you read negative comments from others that post go fund me things it would make my anxiety worse.
I've struggled for ages so know what it's like. Pretty much used to it 😥
When I had my first daughter 21 years ago she suffered an adverse reaction to immunizations and as the years passed she regressed to the point she is now in a vegative state. She requires 24/7 care and can no longer speak, walk, talk or do anything herself.
I looked after her until she was 16 then I found a group home for her which is fantastic.
But the years I looked after her I acquired substantial amount of debt as we were backwards and forwards to hospitals and getting medical attention.
I'm was still paying these debts off until last year when a financial counselor suggested going bankrupt.
Its really hard to get out of debt, and youve copped it hard. And i totally understand about not wanting to ask, but I think we all feel everyone in Australia shouldnt go without medical care they need. I think you should put it out there to the universe.
Omg I've never had to pay for a MRI before but I'm in QLD. I hope you can get it sorted out :( this is terrible to be going through.

There’s heaps of places in Vic that bulk bill. I’ve had like 30 and almost all of them are bulk billed whether it’s as an inpatient or an outpatient. Private or local clinic etc.
I don’t think you’re shopping around enough because there’s so so many places.
