I need to help my mum smile again

I’m worried about my mum.

She’s had a horrible life the last 15 years and has seriously neglected her health.

My dad left her for another woman when I was 8 and my sister was 1. My sister was diagnosed with severe mental and physical disabilities.

My sister required 24hr care and mum gave up her career and social life to become my my sister’s full time carer

My grandmother helped us but my father offered us no assistance.

Unfortunately, my grandmother died two years after dad left leaving us with no family support. We lived in housing commission and survived on food donations for many years.

My sister passed away from medical issues 3 years ago when she was 21 and my Mum fell into a deep depression blaming herself for not doing more.

She has depleted her savings and her super buying medical equipment for my sister over the years and paying for my sisters funeral.

She was just starting to get back on her feet again when she broke her teeth.

She urgently needs a set of dentures. Her teeth are broken and painful. The dentist has quoted us thousands to fix her teeth. She’s ashamed to smile and to talk. It breaks my heart. She’s been through so much. I lost my job in covid - I worked in aviation and i can not afford to help her. I feel helpless.

We applied for government assistance but due to covid there is a long waiting list for the public system.

Can anyone suggest what I can do. My Mum doesn’t deserve this.

Could she afford to pay them off. Most dentists do offer payment plans & a lot of them now use services like Afterpay. Unfortunately dental work is expensive and unless she is prepared to wait to use the public system, there isn’t many options. What about setting up a gofundme and asking friends and family to contribute.

The dental teaching hospitals offer free care. If you are in Cairns, the third year students and up do treatments under supervision at no, or low, cost at JCU. Google your nearest dental school. Good luck. Your mum deserves to smile again xx
