Active son gets sore Achilles’ tendon

Does anyone’s Children (mainly boys) have really sore heels after being active, like the Achilles’ tendon I think it is? My son can hardly walk after playing sports. They hurt quite a bit. I took him to the doctor and she said it’s common and just get him to do stretches. Which he did but they still get really sore. Just wondering what helped your child? Or if it’s worth another doctor appointment?

I have something called Achilles tendonosis - I had it in my right Achilles and now it's in my left. I can barely walk sometimes, especially after sitting down for ages or after being on my feet all day. Not only are they painful to walk on, but they are tender to the touch and there is clear inflammation/a lump on mine. I consulted a podiatrist who confirmed mine. It's basically inflammation and micro-tears in the tendon that haven't healed properly. Stretching won't help. It needs rest and ice. Anti-inflammatory medications can help. There are special exercises which a physio or podiatrist can show him. I also highly recommend reviewing footwear and when returning to training trying to minimise training on hard surfaces such as concrete.

Sounds like severs disease common in active boys from 8-teens...

It normally completely resolves on its own however sometimes it requires resting from sport.

Go and see a physiotherapist - get rehab exercises a podiatrist can also be handy - orthotics can often alleviate the pressure on the Achilles’ tendon.

My 8yo has this too. Physio said it’s important to keep calf muscles strong. Good shoes help and heel wedges

You can buy heal wedges from physio and chemist to put under the sole of the shoe and it helps.stretch the tendon by following eccentric exercises for acchilies which can be found on the net.Also shockwave therapy can work well over a few sessions. Look for a physio that can do that. If it persists see your gp for an ultrasound and possibly a referral to a foot specialist.

Heel wedge actually shortens the tendon which usually helps take the pressure off but in giving that advice it’s important to add that stretching repeatedly through the day is super important!
