Anxiety and everything that's going on currently.

How do you deal with anxiety in regards to what's going on in the world. I'm a single mum to a 3yo and I struggle with anxiety but see a psychologist. I'm so paranoid about this coronavirus all of a sudden. I wasn't overly stressed about it as it didn't seem as severe as what it was originally made out to be. But now that it's getting close and everyone else is panacking I'm finding myself doing the same. I'm overweight, not unhealthy and have an alright immune system. But I am so stressed I'm going to get it and die, and my 3yo would be without me. I have already had 2 panic attacks this morning because of it. Can someone please help ease my mind or something. It's my biggest fear either leaving my little girl or losing my mum ( she is in her 50s and smokes but isn't overly unhealthy).

I assume you're Australian?

I just try and rationalise it and look at it with perspective because otherwise it would wholeheartedly cripple me with anxiety too.

We've had about 130 cases of corona in Australia (at my last check). Our population is 25 million. Deaths in Australia have been minimal.
We are fortunate to have a really great healthcare system in comparison to some other countries. So should we contract it, chances are that we'd make a full recovery.
Society as a whole survived SARS, Bird flu, Swine flu, Ebola. I just figure, why shouldn't we recover from this pandemic too!

Also, I've unfollowed most media outlets on my social media and the TV has been off. It's much more peaceful!

I hope that helps some x

Yes I am in Australia. I have the same mindset in that we do have a good healthcare system and that we have come good from other health crisis's. I just can't help but get stressed about it a lot of people said Italy had the same mindset and they got hit really hard. It's just really getting to me at the moment. I think I need to get away from the news as well and stop reading and thinking about it. Just increase hand washing and avoid sick people. If I get it I get it I guess. Thank you!

It’s time to turn the news off!

Sometimes you just have to protect yourself mentally.

My son is one of those people who is genuinely at serious risk (immune-suppressed). So we are taking extra precautions. We aren’t allowing support workers who have recently travelled in to our home and asking those who have symptoms to not work.

I’ve made the decision to only follow a couple of news sites, such as my states health service. Which so far is offering sensible, facts and info on how to protect yourself with out the drama.

I also find it helpful to look at the percentages. The countries with slow infection rates (like Australia) have an extremely low death rate, and a low number of serious cases.

I suffer from diagnosed panic disorder so this new plague scares the shit out of me, especially bcoz I work in very close proximity to others. I had swine flu four yrs ago, and although I was admitted to hospital and was extremely sick, I recovered. Majority of us will recover if we happen to get this mutated version of SARS - Carona. Only difference being the pneumonia part.

But remember Australia is well equipt for new diseases and our country is one of the most least affected.

Doesn't stop us from worrying excessively tho.

All the hype here is just preventative. The majority of us will be ok. Once the vaccine becomes available, this will become a distant memory. Stay strong.

There is a 98.7% chance you WON’T die.
As a fairly healthy woman under 60, there’s an 80+% chance that if you DO catch it, your symptoms will severely MILD.
YOU WILL BE FINE.
TURN OFF THE TV.
HIDE ALL CORONAVIRUS POSTS ON FB!

Talk to a psych about how you’re feeling.

There is almost no reason to even worry about coronavirus. There are so many worse things out there to catch.

You WILL get through this. Look at statistics, NOT fear mongers on Facebook.
You’re more likely to get hit by lightning and die, but that doesn’t make you afraid to step outside?
More likely to get hit by a car and die- Won’t stop you going for a walk.
More likely to choke on a grape and die- you’ll still eat grapes.
Every person is more likely to commit suicide than die from coronavirus.

You WILL NOT die from coronavirus!
Hugs to you. Take a deep breath, and know you’ll be ok. And so will your kids!
(Kids have a 0.2% chance of death, so practically non existent).
