Anxiety about diabetes.

Anxiety about diabetes.

Good Morning lovely ladies.

4 an a half years ago I developed my anxiety, it was really serve to begin with then over a year I was able to control it without any medication.
Now for the past few months I can feel it getting worse again an not being able to control it like I have be able to before.
I've have notice that most of my attacks come from freaking out that I have diabetes, I worry that my blood sugar levels get to low so I eat something then my anxiety "plays tricks" on me an after I've eaten I freak that my blood sugar levels are to high. I worry that I'm going to collapse one day an die, I fear going to sleep in case I don't wake up the next morning.
I have been to the doctors a few times but everything is all fine. It's all just in my head. How can I overcome this fear of diabetes?
I would love to get back in control of my anxiety with out taking medication.

Thanks for any advice given.

I have long term anxiety too and am mostly unmedicated, but when it starts impacting my life in a negative way ie. stopping me going places, stopping me from sleeping, stopping me from being a good mum then I get medication. It's all about weighing up the good vs bad.

Do you have a insulin pump? If not, i highly recommend getting one. There is also a continuous blood glucose monitor that sends alarms to your phone when you BGL starts to drop or becomes to high. (Speak to your diabetes educator). My husband is a t1dm and I suffered anxiety due to his hypos and becoming unresponsive during his sleep. It is a game changer. If you are really concerned, set an alarm at 2am to check your reading.
Do you live alone? Prehaps educating who ever you live with on signs of having a hypo to, because you become less aware when you are in a hypoglycemic state.

She doesn't have diabetes, her anxiety is making her paranoid enough to believe she does

Why are you worried you may have or develop diabetes?
You really need to see a psychologist if your doctor isn't concerned.

When my kids were little and my ex was FIFO I was so worried something would happen to me while I was home alone with the kids and they would be stuck in the house with a dead mother, nobody would know and they would die of dehydration. Morbid thoughts aren't they? It got to the point where I convinced myself I was having a heart attack every night, my heart would race, I couldn't breathe well, pins and needles, sharp pains in my chest...I went to emergency several times and each time the "heart attack" disappeared as soon as I got there, ecgs and tests would all be fine. I was 25, fit and healthy. It was just anxiety but it felt so real and scary at the time. I taught my 4 year old how to ring 000 and how to fill the babies bottle with water if he couldn't wake mummy up. I went on medication and I could eventually see how crazy it all was. Now I'm not medicated anymore and I still have anxiety but it's not as bad. I'm a firm believer in diverting attention to stop anxiety, something that completely consumes your brain like a game, book, TV series. Since yours is repetitive and happening daily I think you should consider meds to get you through this. Good luck.

It really is a nightmare to go through.
I've been going over all day with my eldest what to do in a situation if she can't wake mummy. I just don't want to frighten her.
Thankyou I have seen my gp an we have a plan in place, hoping things get easier soon.

Is there any particular reason its diabetes you're anxious about? As in, does it run in tje family or did you have gestational diabetes? I feel like knowing this will help me answer you

Diabetes does run in the family, and no I didn't have gestational diabetes at all.
I have no idea why it's diabetes in particular, I seen my gp this afternoon an we had a chat about it an thought it was quite strange as well. But we've put a plan in place hoping things will get better.

It runs in my family and i had GD both pregnancies. On a very small level, I fear I will get it later in life so i can ampathise here.

But diabetes is usually only life threatening if left untreated. Its totally managable and extreamly common amongst us. I know this doesnt exactly help the anxiety go away, but I am glad to hear you have a plan in place and have talked to your GP

if you don't actually have diabetes and this is your anxiety talking, then you need to get help. Speak with you GP - be open and honest. Get a mental health plan in order and speak to a psychologist. You deserve better than living with such crippling anxiety.

I have type 2 and was diagnosed at 30.... it really isn’t the end of the world if you keep in touch with your specialist and monitor bloods every so often. As long as kept in check your fine!

Also with your anxiety being really bad by the sounds you should start meds ASAP along with psychology as the meds can take 6-8 weeks to start taking effect!
