Lichen sclerosus

Lichen sclerosus

I was diagnosed with Lichen sclerosus about 2 years ago and put on cortosone cream. I am finding though simply going to the toilet and gently wiping causes discomfort and then the only thing to get rid of the itch is to wipe harder and scratch it. I was wondering if anyone else suffers from this and their experiences.
It makes sex painful and I'm concerned also about long term affects of using cortosone cream.
The doctor believes it may have been caused by trauma during my first labour but she can't say for sure.
All I know is I'm constantly uncomfortable down there.

I was finally diagnosed a little over a year ago after suffering the symptoms for a couple years prior. What you write I suffered too. An almost constant insatiable itch, even when asleep. Scratching always helped but usually broke the skin, as would cheap toilet paper at work. And don't get me started on the broken skin and bruising from pads during my period! Sex was painful and we had one bad instance when my husband slipped and I was cut and bleed so badly it was dripping like a horror movie.
I was finally referred to a specialist clinic at the Royal Womens Hospital in Melbourne and use Diprosone ointment. Initially twice a day then slowly reducing after each check up to twice a week now (previously GP told me it isn't good to be using steroid ointment constantly but the RWH said that is infact false and won't hurt. They said it's much better to keep the condition under control than use the ointment, stop, it reoccurs and the cycle goes over and over).
I wasn't picked up early enough and do have some fusing and reabsorption but have been able to stop it (sadly never reverse it) with treatment.
LS is an auto immune disease and as such they can't say why we get it.
There is a AUS/NZ FB support page, join it, it is a closed page so private and confidential and helps to see you aren't the only one (I don't feel i can discuss it with anyone other than husband and mum).
If you need to chat, reply here and I'll send you a PM xx
