Volunteer work

Has anyone volunteered anywhere to gain work experience?
I have been out of work for 8 years and it's incredibly hard gaining employment without experience.
I have just done some googling and my local hospital has some volunteer positions I would love to do, in hopes it could lead to employment down the track as I know some places like to hire from within.

Sadly I don’t think volunteering helps much these days when it comes to finding employment. I haven’t worked in 15 years but have been volunteering for 8 years at a variety of organisations hoping it would lead to a paying job. It hasn’t. And even with all my volunteering experience I can’t even get an interview.

I volunteered at one primary school while doing my Cert 3 in Education Support and through the school network was recommended I apply when another school 40km away had an opening.

I can only see it being a good thing, especially if volunteering in the industry you want to work in. I also think you should study or do some short courses to help boost your resume up and make you look eager for the work force.

Try your local op shop they are always looking for volunteers, and I know that the salvos in particular really like to hire from within
