Career ideas / inspiration:-)

Hi Mummas, I have been at home raising my babies (well, big kids now) for almost 10 years now. I have never had a career or even a full time job, just night fill at a supermarket, because it fits around the kids school hours and hubbys job. I'm in my early 30's and really want to do a degree and start a career for myself. Not just float around doing jobs to pay the bills. But, my problem is I have no idea what I want to do! I don't even know what I enjoy. All I know is staying home with kids. I don't even know what careers / degrees / options are out there. So I'm looking for ideas of careers and degree options. What degrees did you Mummas do and / or what careers do you have??
Thanks!! :-)

You can do some pathway courses into university to brush up on academia as you will need the scores to get in anyway , that way you dont need to know right away what you want to do , and while you're there , see what the other uni students are hoping to do, as something there might just jump out at you and grab your attention. Or TAFE Diplomas in beauty therapy are really popular , much quicker,
and will generate a great income for you sooner .

I studied communication because I figured every single thing has or needs a communication dept/office. It was great because as it went on I could choose to specialise and the avenues were so diverse, from internal communication, to marketing, HR, media, journalism. Once I graduated I worked in different roles as a communications officer.
My advice is to find the online list of all Australian unis and courses, and then browse. Keep browsing and looking at what interests you. Then go for one. Just get started.

If you want to have a look at the variety of jobs/careers out there, go to some of the high school or VOC careers days/nights. Take your oldest kid if you are embarrassed to front for yourself. Ask lots of questions, listen to all the other people's questions, be a sponge.... there are jobs now that weren't invented when we were at school. I read somewhere recently that 50% of the jobs that will exist in 5 years don't even exist now... allow your mind to soar and choose something that inspires you. There will be no such thing as retirement for our generation, we will reinvent and recreate our 'work' until we are 10 years from death. For a healthy woman that means working in some form until we are at least 80. Frightening but also extremely exciting! :)

I became a police officer. I was 31 when I started and was middle of the range. There were ladies who were in the mid 40s doing it! Go for it!

I studied marketing, and am now in finance, before you commit to a degree maybe do a few short courses for 2 reasons gives you a chance to juggle study with kids it’s hard, and also gives you a taste of different options . Also think about what you want out of a job, finance wealth, personal satisfaction, flexibility, travel, as all of these have different impacts. I now have to travel every quarter and my youngest hates it.... and to be honest, I am now going to try and send one of my team as it’s not worth her stress to go, it’s also a logistic nightmare. No right or wrong good luck
