Asthma

Ok so my son has had a cough for over a month but he isn’t sick earlier in the week we went to the doctor he said he has asthma. I have no experience with asthma so I don’t know what’s normal. So he’s taking the puffers but they don’t seem to be doing anything so back to the doctors yesterday and he was shocked there hasn’t been any improvement he’s certain it’s asthma but had done a swab on his mouth to make sure it’s not viral. He said using the puffer should give instant relief for example I gave him the puffer at 6am and my son still hasn’t stopped coughing. Is this normal ? I’m so confused

Puffer should provide relief ...
Did he get preventor ???

I would be going hospital if the puffer not working

Are U giving4 puffs 4 breaths
.. continue if he still coughing and finding hard to breath I would call nurse on call or go hospital...

Yes he has the preventor. I was told to do 2 puffs and 10 breaths??? Every 4 hours or when needed.
It’s not hindering his breathing at all just more of an annoyance coughing all the time. He’s still very active and happy.

I reckon you need a new doctor, if this is only a new thing then I’d be seeking a second opinion. If it was ongoing I’d assume asthma but if it’s only new I’d be assuming it’s a cough or infection. I’ve had a cough for the last few weeks. When I was pregnant I had a cough that lasted a few months. They were calling it the 100 day cough.

Puffer should give instant relief. Follow the with a plan. If it hasn't stopped in 4 minutes go to the next step, which is doctor or hospital. Please don't just let it go on.

Puffers are not cough suppressants - reliever puffers (ventolin and asmol) help to dilate the alveoli in the lungs to allow better movement of oxygen and other gases into and out of the body to relieve shortness of breath and wheezing. Preventer puffers contain low dose steroids to reduce inflammation in the lung to again allow better movement of gases into and out of the body and prevent wheezing and shortness of breath long term. While they will help reduce coughing if it is related to lung inflammation they wont necessarily stop it completely even if it is asthma. I would definitely suggest going back to the doctor and/or getting a second opinion. Some viruses cause a cough for sometime after other symptoms have resolved or there are other things that need to be investigated.

If it's an asthma cough it does stop it.

This happens to my son at least once a year, usually around winter/ flu season. The cough will hang around for about a week, we will does him up what seem like hourly to no avail. We end up back at the doctor for a script for a liquid steroid, prednisone. Within 3 days he is back to normal.

Yes same for us. as per asthma treatment plan if ventolin doesn't work go to doctor or hospital immediately, they will treat and monitor and if it's asthma will give prednisone and that will help them. If left untreated, not only is child miserable as has impaired breathing but also at risk of having a more severe or suddenly drastic asthma episode and needing long hospitalization and treatment. It can be very scary. Definitely get ontop of it.

Doesn’t sound right.
My daughter 3 and a half recently diagnosed with asthma.
As this is the third year she starts getting a cough as soon as it’s cold, but she’s not sick etc (they’re calling it seasonal asthma at the moment)
She’s on the preventative twice a day, and it’s definitely helped with how many coughing fits she has.
Some days are horrible, but as soon as we give her ventolin she’ll stop coughing (if it’s only mild) and be fine.
A few times we’ve had to give a few doses but it always helps her to stop coughing and breath okay once she’s had ventolin.
