Sensory seeking tools.

Sensory seeking tools.

We are in the process of getting our son diagnosed with autism. We know he is a sensory seeker mostly and he has just started chewing on his lower lip and it’s causing sores on his lower lip. Prior to his lip he was chewing on his toys or sometimes his shirt so I think I need to get some chew jewellery or something simlar for him. Trouble is I have been looking online and there are so many places and different ones and I have no idea what to get or where from. He is 4 almost 5. From what I have seen there is different grades of chewing things too so is it all just trial and error until you find one that works for him? Any help that people could give me would be great. Thanks.

A few mums i know have bought the ones that are smaller so they can fit the entire chew piece in their kids mouth. Hope that helps.

I’m a lip chewer too. Especially since I quit biting my nails.
I actually use a silicone pencil grip as a chew toy. Sounds silly, but it gives a good sensation in the mouth and stops me getting sores on my lips (and people asking if it’s a cold sore)

Our 7yr old son has SPD & anxiety. I purchased the saber tooth in black (moderate chewer) as the things he chose to chew weren't rigid - jumper sleeve, polo shirt collar, soft plastic or rubber toys. It works well for him. Our OT also said chewing gum and drink bottles with soft rubber straws.

We have quite a few 'chewies' in our house. Silicone chews get destroyed quite quickly by our eldest chewer so we now give him paracord bracelets to chew and chuck them in the wash or dishwasher daily.
