looking after niece

My 16 year old niece is wanting to come and live with me and go to school. I live in the city and she lives in the country. She is being bullied at school which is a big reason for leaving and recently lost her dad. My question is about centrelink. Does it get transfered to who ever is looking after the child or is it just up to the mother to pass it on. I have 4 young kids of my own and get ftb. Her mother is unemployed.

so the mother can nominate you as the recipient, however I’d say it’s just be easier to forget about FTB altogether. As your niece is 16 she can claim her own youth allowance payment. She may even get living away from home allowance etc too. Then she can contribute and will have her own money too so you don’t need to worry about paying for her to do thing with her friends etc.

At 16 she should be entitled to youth allowance or living away from home allowance (which is more money but I think you have to prove living at home isn't a possibility). Either way her mum will need to notify centrelink otherwise she'll be getting paid for a child that's not in her care, then you can either apply for the youth allowance or you should be able to put her straight on to your FTB.
