Unfocused child

Hi I.M's

I'm writing to ask advice on report cards and bad grades. My son is not a dumb kid but he really struggles at school. He had a bad start to school life and went through a very dark stage after his dad and I split and his grandad passed who he was very close to. He then had a very bad teacher in year one. He's now in year four He gets distracted easily but we never hear about it until the reports come. Even though we are there every day to be talked to. It never comes up when we talk to the teachers. We are moving to a new school and are getting him a tutor. My question is "what strategies do you have at home to help them in class?" He's really far behind but they don't keep them down. We need to work on keeping him focused as he's not completing enough of his work to be learning it properly. His dad and I are very concerned he's going to struggle all through school and we just want to make life easier for him.
T.I.A for any suggestions

I'd be looking at why. Does he have an un-diagnosed reading disorder? Some kids who have reading issues come off as distracted etc but they are actually just finding reading very hard. Reading and intelligence are two different things. You can be really smart but find reading/ decoding difficult. Also has his eyes been tested etc? Getting all of those things checked off will give you more information for the tutor. It wouldn't hurt if all that comes back clear if he had an appointment with a paediatrician just to make sure there isn't something that's been missed.
