Crutches, pregnant and a 4yo

Im 30 weeks pregnant, with a 4yo, yesterday i took a bit of a fall and went down on my ankle pretty bad. Didn't land on belly and baby is fine. But my ankle, not so much, ended up in hospital and turns out ive got ligament and muscle damage, i have to wear a compression bandage and im on crutches for potentially upto 2 weeks, maybe more, depending on how it quickly it heals. I do have family that can help, but they all work and have their own commitments, and hubby works away. So im now 30 weeks pregnant, on crutches with a 4yo. How does one function with crutches, a big belly and a full on 4yo that doesn't understand why u cant just get up and walk? I struggle to do the simplest of things and doctor said i need to have it elevated and rest....how haha....how does one just put parenting on hold to rest?

Ask your family to make you up some lunch boxes with lunch and snacks in for your child and yourself. That way your son can help himself throughout the day to his food etc.
if you need food shopping get a home delivery from Coles or Whoollies. They bring everything into your kitchen.
If a family member could do some slow cooked meals that you can just reheat or even better order takeaway!
Make mr 4 your little helper.

Also get a family member to put a stool/chair near the microwave so you can sit on it while you take food out and in.

TV TV TV for his entertainment.

Don't worry about keeping up with housework but you could consider employing a home helper on a temporary basis.

Thanks :) unfortunately my family are pretty busy with their work and lives, they wouldn't have time to even prep meals. And where i live is pretty remote, the grocery stores here don't deliver unfortunately. Mr 4yo is a big helper though, hes pretty independent, thank goodness, he is able to make his own sandwiches, get fruit or biscuits and get his own drinks. Im very lucky in that regard, he also entertains himself. I think i have a chair placed at just about every spot around the house haha, one at kitchen sink to do dishes, one in the laundry to do washing....I just hope i heal quickly and can be back on my feet again

So sorry to hear that you have injured yourself. Hopefully it heals really quickly.

Your doctors may have already discussed this with you, but in case they haven't I will bring it up. I am a Nurse and Midwife, just so you know that I am not just talking out of my arse....

Due to your pregnancy, and now the injury and potential long rest periods (hopefully!) you are at an increased risk of blood clots forming in your calves (DVT). These can be fatal, especially if the clots travel to your lungs.

I suggest that you speak with your GP, midwife, obstetrician, all three if necessary, about commencing prophylactic therapy on blood thinners. Depending on which state you live this may be Clexane or Fragmin.

Also, as much as you are able to, do exercises with your ankles and calves (similar to those suggested on flights) to keep the blood flowing in your lower body.

All the best, and I hope you are back on both of your feet really soon.
